The Apprenticed Teacher
Program of the Studio of Piano Fine Arts was begun
in 1996, in an effort to meet the demand for
beginning piano lessons in Harlan. Accomplished High
School musicians who have been trained through the
studio are invited to become Apprenticed Teachers.
Students must be actively taking lessons in their
preferred instruments, and they also attend
Apprentice Classes once weekly in order to be taught
the specific curriculum espoused by The Studio of
Piano Fine Arts. Apprenticed Teachers since the
founding of the program have been: Kelly Wills, Anne
Pope, Allison Grieshop, Will Johnson, Loren Jackson,
Sasha Atkins, Cassie Haywood, Justin Taylor, Jaid
Ragg, Victoria Smith, and Jenna Noe, and Sean
Greene.
A College Intern Program was established within the
studio in 2002 which mirrors the activities of the
Apprenticed Teacher program requirements. The
additional work that a college intern might do
focuses around office work, computer musical
notation and software, and managing the catalog
services of Pleasant Mountains Publishing Company

All Interns attend weekly curriculum classes, and
have a specific teaching load of students assigned
to them.
Victoria Smith has studied piano with Clara
Atkins-Pope for 12 years. Beginning when only 4
years old, Victoria was acknowledged to be a very
gifted student in her musical studies. She has
worked as an Apprenticed Teacher for 3 years.
Victoria admits to being challenged by working as an
Apprenticed Teacher. She writes, “The Apprentice
Program has challenged me, because I must be
prepared to answer the various questions my students
ask.” Preparation for such questions is diligently
taught through weekly training sessions that each
apprenticed teacher must attend. After completion of
her High School Studies, Victoria enrolled in
Soutehast Kentucky Community and Technical College
System. She is now working with the
Studio as a College Intern. Victoria hopes to
ursue some sort of music degree. She admits
that she would love to become a church pianist.
She enjoys performing the offertory at church, and
would also enjoy continueing to teach.

Apprenticed Teacher
Victoria Smith instructs a beginning piano
student. A standard suggested repertoire of
method books is used by each teacher within
the studio. An effort to maintain
consistency within the curriculum helps
students pass from one teacher to another
easily, without loss of content.
